Understanding a Drug Test
A drug test involves the technical examination of a biological specimen, including urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, and saliva, to identify the presence or absence of specified drugs or their metabolites. Drug testing applications include detecting steroids in sports, employment or legal compliance screening, and assessing alcohol use through BAC (blood alcohol content) levels. Techniques range in accuracy and sensitivity, and may also encompass illicit drug analysis aimed at promoting responsible usage.
Does Passive Marijuana Smoke Cause a False Positive?
Exposure to marijuana smoke in shared spaces is not assumed to lead to a false positive, as lab cut-off concentrations are set beyond levels typically associated with passive inhalation.
Abnormal urine screen results can suggest false negatives or sample tampering. For instance:
- A low creatinine value might indicate sample dilution through water consumption before testing or adulteration with additional water.
- Creatinine levels are evaluated with specific gravity to detect sample dilution. Some labs color toilet water blue to prevent dilution during sample collection.
- Attempts to modify urine with enzymes can alter pH balance, which is subject to testing.
Drug Detection Duration in Your System
The detection window for drugs is influenced by various factors. Factors affecting how long a drug remains detectable include:
- Quantity of drug consumed
- Frequency of drug use
- Type of drug used
- Individual metabolic rate and overall health
- Fluid intake post-ingestion
- Physical activity post-ingestion
- Genetic factors impacting drug response
