Choosing the Right Drug Test Panel

Understanding Drug Testing

Drug testing involves technical analysis of biological specimens—such as urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or saliva—to determine the presence or absence of specific drugs or their metabolites. Common applications include detecting performance-enhancing drugs in sports and screening by employers or parole officers. Breath tests are often used for detecting blood alcohol content (BAC).

Can Passive Marijuana Smoke Cause a False Positive?

Exposure to marijuana smoke isn't considered to cause false positives as lab cut-off values exceed potential levels from passive inhalation.

Irregularities might indicate a false negative or sample tampering. For instance:

  • Low creatinine levels might signify dilution, either by large water intake before the test or adding water to the sample.
  • Creatinine levels alongside specific gravity can identify diluted samples. To prevent dilution, water in the testing toilets may be colored.
  • Attempts to alter stability with enzymes can change pH levels, which are also assessed during testing.

Drug Retention in the Body

The detection window for drug tests depends on several factors, including:

  • Drug Dosage
  • Frequency of Use
  • Type of Drug
  • Individual Metabolism and Health Condition
  • Hydration Levels
  • Physical Activity Post-Ingestion
  • Genetic Factors
